Solum, working with East Hertfordshire Council & Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, has officially opened a new pedestrian link between the Millennium Bridge and Bishop’s Stortford Station -delivering a significant improvement to the journey experience for residents, commuters and visitors to the town.

The opening marks another major milestone following the successful planning resolution in May 2025, which will enable the delivery of up to 423 new homes, alongside wider benefits including public realm enhancements, river towpath upgrades and improved access to sustainable transport connections.

Situated within a newly landscaped area, the pedestrian link provides a high-quality, valuable connection to Bishop’s Stortford Station when approaching from the west.

The scheme includes substantial public realm, soft landscaping, newly planted trees and a dedicated public play area, creating an attractive and welcoming environment for the community.

As part of this first phase, Solum has also delivered an upgrade to the river towpath, improving accessibility and supporting the long-term vision for a more connected river corridor. Beneath the landscaped areas, a major flood attenuation system has been installed, helping to relieve pressure on the existing inverted syphon and supporting the town’s resilience to future rainfall and climate impacts.

The contractor, Entex, kindly hosted the event, initially from the Goods Yard Coffee Co, along with the Solum project team, welcoming Councillors Murray White, Richard Bower, Yvonne Estop and David Jacobs to the opening of this important addition to the town’s infrastructure.

Leigh Thomas, Group managing director and head of Solum said: “The opening of the new pedestrian link is a significant step forward in our long-term partnership with East Hertfordshire Council. Not only does it create a safer and more attractive route into Bishop’s Stortford Station, but it also delivers meaningful public realm and environmental enhancements. We are proud to continue investing in the town and look forward to progressing the wider development, including much-needed new homes and further community benefits.”

Councillor David Jacobs from East Hertfordshire Council commented: “Welcomed the opening of the new link and said, “This new pedestrian link is a major improvement to the Goods Yard environment for residents and commuters alike. As well as improving connectivity from the Millenium Bridge, meaning travelers no longer have to work their way through a car park, it also significantly enhances the public realm with attractive green spaces and a small children’s play park facilities. I am really pleased to see Solum delivering tangible benefits for the community.”

Councillor Murray White from Bishop’s Stortford Town Council added: “Today’s opening demonstrates how thoughtful infrastructure and good partnership working can positively shape the future of our town. The link, the landscaping, and the flood attenuation scheme all contribute to a safer, greener, and more accessible Bishop’s Stortford.”
